God of War (2018) meticulously developed a whole new layer of depth to Kratos through its absolutely masterful and thoughtful writing, dialogue, and voice performances.
Nearly every conversation between Kratos and Atreus feels thoughtful and profound, as does Kratos’s development through the game. The world building, both through Mimir’s storytelling and through the visible environmental aftermath of it’s history, is incredibly effective, making this Norse world feel mysteriously immense. The gameplay and action sequences, from the first fight with Baldur that continually exceeded and subverted all expectations, to the final fight with Baldur that does so again for completely different reasons, are also expertly crafted.
Masterpiece.
