Risk of Rain 2 is an enjoyable roguelite with real depth in its mechanics, filled with countless items and abilities that all have various amounts of synergetic combo potential between each other. The powers and secrets are cool, and the various characters you can choose from all feel unique and advantageous in different ways.
The core and fundamental gameplay, however, is severely lacking, and it all gets really repetitive really fast, despite the large array of builds the game allows you to develop. The combat mechanics feel barebones, the movement is basic, and the visual flair of it all is underwhelming at first, and boringly chaotic as you progress.
Risk of Rain 2 is certainly lots of fun the moment you get your hands on it, and experimenting with the builds gets you a little further, but once the novelty of it all wears off, you’re left with mediocre gameplay and underwhelming visuals.
