Resident Evil 2 is a masterclass of horror, brilliantly modernizing and improving the original experience with its incredible new engine, the terrifying chase sequences with Mr. X, the gorgeous visuals, the improved level designs, and the amazing gameplay.
Resident Evil 2 embodies the genre of survival horror in all the best ways; the enemies and the situations you’re thrust into are terrifying (who knew zombies who play dead could be so scary?), managing your resources is a must, the puzzles are plentiful and well designed, and the constant stress from knowing Mr. X is following you wherever you go (those footsteps still haunt me) adds another layer of tension to the experience.
Beyond that, the gameplay itself is incredibly fluid and impressive, with every shot you take feeling incredibly impactful (partially thanks to the enemy damage/gore system, and partially thanks to the perfect gun visuals/sounds/gameplay). Both the Raccoon City Police Department and the Umbrella labs are visually gorgeous, the story is good enough, and the pacing is excellent.
RE2R set the new standard for remakes, is easily one of the best horror games ever made, and is more than a pleasure to get through.
Is It Worth Playing ?
It’s an absolute must play.
